MECHANICAL ENGINEER
ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
The Energy Management subteam ensures Gentoo operates reliably in Antarctica by designing and optimizing power systems built to withstand extreme conditions. This team bridges electronics, renewable energy, thermal management, and embedded systems, applying both theoretical expertise and hands-on engineering to develop resilient, autonomous energy solutions for polar exploration.
If you are interested in extreme-environment power systems, high-reliability energy storage, or embedded power control, this subteam offers the opportunity to work on real-world challenges. The responsibilities within energy management are diverse, making it a great fit for engineers from various technical backgrounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Design and optimize the energy generation system for the team's polar rover, focusing on solar panel systems initially.
-
Collaborate with other technical sub-teams to create an energy balance model for the vehicle.
-
Develop and implement analytical models to predict the performance of the energy system under different operating conditions.
-
Analyze the data generated from testing the system to make improvements to the design and identify potential issues.
-
Conduct research to identify alternative energy sources and develop new energy storage systems.

-
Work closely with other technical sub-teams to ensure that the energy system is fully integrated with other aspects of the rover's design.
